Vegan options - Barcelona, Spain

Updated: May 7, 2018

Recently visiting Barcelona I discovered a lovely vegan store named Vega Raw Organic. Inside was an aladdins cave of vegan food, including freshly made food you can eat in or take away. We had a day at the beach and I wanted to take something that was nutritious. I decided to go for the large take out carton. They charged by weight/section the food was in. For example, section A and section B had different dishes to try. I wanted to try a bit of everything so filled my carton with as many goodies as possible and paid for the mixed section option. The staff were super friendly and were always happy to help. The store is located just off la rambla and seems to be open until late. Perfect shop if you want to pick up a few supplies also, they seriously have everything you could need. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to taste their selections of ice-creams but they all looked so good ( and as I can imagine would taste brilliant as the food I had got from their was always super tasty).

We also would enjoy getting fresh fruits for breakfast from the La Boqueria Markets. A tub of fresh fruits ready to eat for around €1.5 - €3 depending on the options. Mango and strawberries were my go to. Always tasted much nicer than back in the UK where the fruit has been shipped around. They also have cold smoothies on ice, €1.5. Papaya and coconut was a particularly tasty one! There were also vegetable samosas for around €2 each, made in a whole wheat pastry. They tasted a bit like a vegetable cornish pastie, which was lovely.

We were walking around on the last evening around 10:30pm when I suddenly started to want ice-cream. Not a usual time for an ice-cream store to be open but we managed to hunt down one that was open AND had vegan ice-cream too! Gelaaati di marco at the edge of the Gothic Quarter, open until midnight. They had a super rich dark chocolate flavour and a matcha with praline. It was heavenly. They did have a few other vegan flavours too but as we had got there so late they had run out. Priced reasonably, large portions and very friendly staff too! Would certainly go again next time.

This was my second trip to Barcelona, back in 2014 I had ventured there for the first time. Just as I was transitioning to the vegan lifestyle. Back then it did seem much harder to find things such as soy milk in a coffee shop. But now in 2018, most of the restaurants had a vegan option (vegan/veggie paella being my fav!) and all the coffee shops we went to had soy milk or almond milk. There were many other places we went by that were vegan but didn't have chance to try them all... maybe that can be my excuse to visit again soon. Brilliant and beautiful city and of course, vegan friendly.
